| 1977 , Frank Jones was asked to provide a band to play during a major flea market that was to be held in Vernon Park. According to Mr. Jones the crowd enjoyed the music so much that he decided to bring the music back the following year even though the flea market had been discontinued. This event known as the “Peoples' Festival" has taken place in Vernon Park every summer since. Through the years many different festivals have become part of the summer activities enjoyed throughout the city of Philadelphia. This often makes it difficult to gain the needed participation year after year. But without fail the bands, vendors, community organizations and the people return to celebrate this annual legacy. This event plays host to a consistent two-day crowd of 7,000 to 10,000 attendees. Mr. Jones said his reason for continuing the festival was to give something back to the community where he lived. “People need a two day outlet just to relieve some of the tension that’s out there.” The festival’s primary mission is centered on two areas. First to celebrate peace, unification, diversity and the solidarity that exists within our community. And finally, to afford all local organizations, churches, business persons and elected officials the opportunity to give back to the community by showing gratitude for the many years of patronage and support given by the residents of Germantown. Though Mr. Jones is no longer with us, his dream shared with the late Malachai Moore (former production partner) will continue to live on through a community of volunteers, the Peoples’ Festival Committee, who share in his vision and celebrate his Spirit. |
