L.A. VIRGIL (Continuation)
Here she established the first united pay scales for local artists at a range of $100 to $500 per song.
A song writer since the age of 16 she was the winner of a contest at Talent Inc. in Boston which aspired her to
write her first overseas song "Lovesick" and soon after became a certified lyricist and was eventually featured
on the All American Hollywood Artist Recording label with producers Eddie Parris and Steve Louis.
Her song writing skills were noticed by Eldra Debarge who introduced her to Motown's legendary Suzanne
Depasse and Tony Jones. A current writer for the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers
(ASCAP) and the International Marketing Coordinator for (BMR) studios who did the sound track for the film
"In Her Shoes". LA linked up with Rotimi Martins, Ayo Johnson and Angie Parris to produce the former hit
local teen television show "Fast Forward" which she also sang and co wrote with Wendall Simmons the theme
song.
The first female Bermudian to direct a documentary short she worked with Spike Lee, Erykah Badu's
documentarian Kervin Devonish and Errol Williams to produce the controversial film "Isles of Devils/Land of
Light" that was featured in the 2003 Bermuda film festival.
Under the Sons of Ace Label "World Beat" her songs "Spiritual Awakening" and "People Change" received
airplay while her dance tune composition "You are the one for me" was heard throughout the East Coast.
Ms. Virgil says that as an associate member on the Grammy Board (NARIS) she would like to see a
Bermudian walk across the stage to receive a Grammy.
A Community Activist she fought alongside Hubert Smith for local musicians' airplay and with him proposed
the Bermuda Legends Awards which came to life for one year. LA was proud to facilitate Uncle Hubbie's last
dream by co-producing his CD "Bermuda Santa Clause" and recognizes his dedication in the fight for
musicians' rights.
As a journalist LA has interviewed numerous celebrities and has had over 300 published articles some of
which were published in "Bermuda Times", "The Bermuda Sun", and "The Royal Gazette". She also was the
first to establish local artists CD reviews.
LA's support for local talent was evident in her production of a six hour musical workshop at the opening of
Cedar Bridge Academy and when she was assisted by Choy Aming in honouring several Bermudians at the
Clay House Inn - that night is a memorable one because Eddie DeMello helped her to surprise Hubert Smith
Sr.
LA's proposed vision is to have annual events similar to Chances '97 and to call it "Bermuda International
Music Conference" to include world wide participants. As well as having music videos filmed here.
